Stronger Than Death
“Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
— Luke 7:14-15
Jesus spoke with the poor woman who lived in Nain. When Jesus raised her dead son from the dead, it was a miraculous feat of healing that he performed. However, it is made abundantly clear in the Bible that Jesus did not perform this miracle in order to put on a show or to impress anyone else; rather, he did it out of compassion for this grieving mother.
This incredible account of a miracle provides us with a foreshadowing of an even greater miracle that is going to take place very soon. The fact that Jesus was able to raise the dead son of this widow from the grave demonstrates that he is more powerful than death. And on the third day after he died for our sins on the cross, Jesus rose from the dead, demonstrating that he had paid the full price for our transgressions. Because of his own resurrection, Jesus is not only more powerful than death, but it also means that he has triumphed over the authority of death in a way that cannot be reversed.
Prayer:
God of hope, the concept of death fills us with both sadness and fear. Because of the power of the resurrection of Jesus, we pray that you will show us the way forward and give us comfort, courage, and hope. Show us the way. Amen.
